The bills that started it all
Household Advocate began at a kitchen table, with a stack of bills and a mother who had no one to help her sort them out.
When Melissa Stiavelli's stepfather passed away, she sat down with her mother to go through the household bills he had always handled. What she found stopped her cold. Her mother was paying more than $200 a month for cable channels she never watched, internet speed she had no use for, and a phone plan that made no sense for how she actually lived.
She had no idea. And more to the point, she had no one whose only job was to look out for her.
That's the part that stuck with Melissa. Her mother wasn't careless. She was a loyal customer who had done nothing wrong except stay with the same providers year after year, while the introductory rates quietly expired and the charges crept up. The companies were counting on exactly that. And there was no neutral person in the picture, nobody being paid to sit on her side of the table and ask whether any of it still made sense.
So Melissa became that person. First for her mother, then for family, then for neighbors. Every time, the story was some version of the same one: real money going out the door every month for things nobody would have chosen if they'd been shown the bill line by line. Household Advocate grew out of doing this enough times to know it wasn't a coincidence. It was the norm.
Who we are
We're based in the Lehigh Valley, in eastern Pennsylvania. Melissa grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs, and we serve the greater Philadelphia region and beyond. Because a bill review happens over email and the phone, where you live matters less than you'd think. What matters is that a real person looks at your actual situation.
That person is Melissa. She reads every bill, does the research herself, and writes recommendations built around what you actually watch and use. Not a template. Not an algorithm. Not a call center reading from a script.
Why we do it the way we do
Everything about how Household Advocate works traces back to that kitchen table.
The review is free, and we tell you what we found before you pay anything. Melissa's mother didn't need a sales pitch. She needed someone to tell her the truth about her own bills. So that's what we do first, at no cost. You learn how much you can save before you decide whether you want our help getting there.
We charge one flat fee, only when we find real savings. Not a percentage of your savings stretched over a year. Not a subscription. One honest fee, and nothing at all if we find less than $20 a month. We'd genuinely rather tell you your bills are already in good shape than invent a reason to charge you.
We stay on your side of the table. When we help with the calls, we do it with you, on a three-way call - not by taking over your account behind the scenes. You hear everything and you stay in control, because that's what we'd want for our own family.
We explain everything in plain English. Melissa's mother wasn't "tech-savvy," and she didn't need to be. Neither do you. Every recommendation comes written the way a helpful relative would explain it, one step at a time.
The honest part
We'll say the thing most companies in this business won't: you can do all of this yourself, for free. Call your providers, ask for the retention department, ask what promotions you qualify for. We even publish the script.
What we offer is for the people who would rather not - who don't have the time, or the patience for being on hold, or the comfort with pushing back on a company that does this for a living. That was Melissa's mother. It may be you, or someone you love. If it is, that's exactly who we built this for.
